Bisphenol A (BPA) is used to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. It is commonly found in polycarbonate plastic bottles, canned food linings, cash register receipt tape, and dental sealants.
An increasing body of scientific evidence indicates that BPA is an endocrine (hormone) disruptor as well as a reproductive and developmental toxicant. Studies have linked BPA exposure to increased risk of breast and prostate cancer, impaired immune function, obesity, diabetes, early onset of puberty, hyperactivity, aneuploidy, and other disorders.
As You Sow has engaged banks as well as food and beverage manufacturers and retailers, through shareholder advocacy and the development of an industry scorecard about use bisphenol A (BPA) in products and packaging. (Read our Seeking Safer Packaging reports for the results of the scorecard).
Our dialogues have increased company awareness about the risks of using BPA, persuaded the development of alternatives, and encouraged improved transparency with investors and customers.
