Boards Eye Viral Employee Protests

More than 386 employees at e-commerce giant Amazon have broken the company’s rules by posting statements on a social media site to complain that their employer is a major factor in climate change. And the list keeps growing. Directors and other governance observers suggest other U.S. companies may see similar protests as workplace activism on internal environmental, social and governance issues inspired by the Amazon group go viral.

“Other companies will watch and learn from Amazon,” writes Sheila Hooda, a board director on several public and private boards. She points out that employees there clearly did not feel they were being heard through internal channels, which led to bad morale, “huge” reputational damage and possible defections by key employees.
