Another major petrochemical company has agreed to publicly report its plastic pellet pollution under mounting public pressure from an activist shareholders group.
Westlake Chemical Corp., a Houston chemical and plastics manufacturer, said Wednesday that it has agreed to publicly report its spills of tiny preproduction plastic pellets, or nurdles.
Plastic pellets are considered by scientists to be a major source of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans and a dangerous environmental hazard to wildlife. The tiny plastic balls, which are made as feedstock for plastic products, are easily spilled and then mistaken by birds and fish for food.
