McDonald’s Bows to Investor Pressure on Packaging
After facing years of pressure from investors, McDonald’s has pledged to eliminate one more vestige of environmentally unfriendly packaging by year’s end at its offshore restaurants. The hamburger chain announced this month that it will quit using plastic polystyrene — known as Styrofoam — for hot and cold drinks and boxes for breakfast meals in all its non-U.S. restaurants.
The action is a victory for the persistent shareholders and social responsibility advocates who have filed proposals since 2011 over the issue.
